Description
With each new wave upon the beach, a thousand shells come into reach.
I stand transfixed at surf’s retreat, leaving gems here at my feet.
So many here for me to see, their beauty captivating me.
The work is arduous, I know, decisions with each ebb and flow.
How can I know which ones to choose? Which ones to take, which ones to lose?
Pluck the prize and leave the rest, discard the flawed, procure the best.
Pursuit of one means leaving others, missing those the sand now smothers.
Choosing shells with magic powers, I toil away, ‘immersed’ for hours.
And when I’m finished for the day, I contemplate, inspect my pay.
My task is difficult it’s true,
But I’ve got nothing-else-in-the-whole-wide-world to do!

I wrote the above poem after a long day of collecting shells on Sanibel Island, Florida many years ago. If you've never been to Sanibel, and you love shelling, this is the mother, lode!
