Description
"It's not getting from A to B. It's not the beginning or the destination that counts. It's the ride in between...This train is alive with things that should be seen and heard. It's a living, breathing something -- you just have to want to learn its rhythm." ~David Baldacci, The Christmas Train
Ever since I was a kid, I've had a fascination with trains. Maybe it was because we lived with my grandparents for a while while the folks were building our new house, and Grandma And Grandpa Mancuso's house was across the street from the railroad tracks which just so happened to run the length of the main street in Jamesburg, New Jersey.
I used to love when the old coal burner steam locomotives would come through town, and the engineer or conductor would stop to get a cup of coffee or lunch at Collura's Sweet Shoppe. My dad would carry me outside and coax me to use the universal hand and arm signal to get the engineer to blow the whistle...they nearly always obliged. Sometimes, if we were really lucky, the engineer would jolt the train just enough to have a couple pieces of coal fall off and we kids would run and try to be the first to get these amazing black 'diamonds'
Now these incredible iron machines are mostly museum pieces, but I've never lost the child-like fascination for them.
And of course, there was annual Lionel toy trains and track under th e christmas tree...
